Ulster Hotel
The current Ulster Hotel, at the corner of Brisbane and Mortimer Streets, Ipswich was completed March 1911. It replaced the old Ulster Hotel dating from 1881 on this site. The building contractors were W. Hastie and F. Halliwell. The architect was H.E. Wyman, with joinery by Arthur Foote of City Joinery at North Ipswich. Hanby & Dangerfield of Brisbane Street completed the plumbing, and plastering was by J. Jamieson. Painting was performed by T. Holmes, with ironwork by S. Shillito & Son. The Ulster was a 2-storey building with underground cellar. Facing the street on 2 sides the construction was brick with cement. The pub was owned by Mrs Mahaffey of Warwick Street, Ipswich. Mr B. Kennedy was licensee. The Ulster Hotel was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.
Dan Dempsey became publican in 1934. His daughter Norma married Denis Flannery. The Dempsey and Flannery families operated the pub until 2016 when it finished trading as a hotel. Since then a restaurant named Memories of India has operated in the pub building.
During World War II the hotel cellar was used as an air raid shelter.
The hotel was flooded in both 1974 and 2011. Following the 2011 floods the pub was closed for about 18 months to repair, rebuild and renovate.
Prior to being called the Ulster Hotel this site was the location of the Horse & Jockey Hotel from 1872-1880. Thomas Breen was granted the liquor license for the Horse & Jockey and to rename it the Ulster in September 1880. At this time the building was owned by Patrick Sullivan.
