DescriptionIpswich Gas and Coke supplied gas, coke, tar, and other products to homes and industries within the city. The company purchased land on the north bank of the Bremer River in early 1877, with the first gas mains laid in North Ipswich later that year, along with street gas lighting, with gas lights first used in the School of Arts building (Brisbane Street) in June 1877. This display at the 1960 Ipswich Show is commemorating the City’s Municipal Centenary (1860-1960) through a history of household gas products, including stoves and lighting.
