DescriptionThis is a copy of a photo taken in 1876 used in the book 'Ipswich Municipal Centenary'. Construction of St Paul’s commenced in 1855. The Reverend John Moseley was the rector at that time. The building was competed in 1859, with alterations made in the 1880s and 1920s. Originally called St Paul’s Church of England it became St Paul’s Anglican Church in 1981. In 1882 the first Galilee Porch, made from cast iron, was installed at the entrance to the church. This would be replaced in 1926 with the current Galilee Porch War Memorial. In 1885, the congregation had outgrown the building, and so over the next three years, aisles and a vestry were added. The brick parsonage to the left was replaced between 1895 and 1896 by a new Church Manse, designed by George Brockwell Gill. Between the Church and parsonage is the manse used as the residence of the Wesleyan Ministers, located on Ellenborough Street and built in 1864. This building still stands, although has been unsympathetically modified. The Wesleyan Chapel (later Central Mission of the Uniting Church in Ipswich) is the oldest church to have had continual use as a church in Queensland.
