Description

DescriptionOriginally the Queensland National Bank, the bank was absorbed by the National Bank of Australasia Limited (established in 1893) in 1948. The bank continued to trade under that name until 1981, when it became National Australia Bank. Upstairs, Ray Jones had his bookshop and library. A guest artist on ABC concert tours with his wife Nancy as accompanist, Jones found it difficult to become a professional singer at this time. He opened his private lending library on the upper floor of the bank building in Brisbane Street. His books were distinctive for their bright pink covers advertising the programmes of the local cinema. The library employed six staff and remained open until 8pm, four nights a week, for thirty years. The building next door housed Fox Chemist.
