DescriptionCoal loading chutes at Box Flat Colliery Extended. Box Flat Colliery commenced in 1897 at Parkhead on Patrick & Ella Streets, Swanbank. Box Flat Extended No. 5 Colliery commenced in 1940 on Swanbank Rd, Swanbank. A massive explosion at 2:47am on 31st July 1972 at Box Flat mine killed 17 men and badly injured several others. A small fire started in the mine about 300 metres underground. After several attempts to close doors in a tunnel a team of 14 men started to seal off stone drives about one kilometre from the entrance. Three more men were at the surface in the entrance to No 5 conveyor belt tunnel. The 17 men included nine officials and employees of Box Flat mine and eight men from the Mines Rescue Station.
