Swanbank
Description
Place TypeLocalitiesHistory
James Foote bought land in this area and named it Swanbank after his wife's birthplace in Scotland. Two earlier names were Logan Lagoon and later Josey's Lagoon. The Box Flat Mine was located at Swanbank. Its coal was mined for the operation of the Swanbank Power Station. Seventeen miners were killed in an underground explosion at Box Flat mine in the early hours of the morning on 31 July 1972. The men remain buried in the mine and a memorial plaque bearing their names was erected at the mine entrance. When underground mining ceased in this area, a park was formally set aside as a memorial.
