Description

DescriptionBack view of the new Congregational Church in East Street during construction. This church replaced the church in Brisbane Street that burnt down in 1953. The Sunday school building is in background. The architect was Scorer & Scorer, Brisbane, and the builder was T.P. Turner, Ipswich. The Electrical installation was carried out by Hoey and Ploetz, East Street. Note the workman in the small shed in the bottom left corner. Taking two years to complete, the new Congregational Church was consecrated in 1958. In 1977, the Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian churches in Australia combined to form the Uniting Church in Australia. In the years since it has been a church, the building has been used as a funeral parlour and art gallery. It is currently vacant (2014).
