Description

DescriptionMonument outside the RSL at North Ipswich corner of Downs and Lowry Streets. This was the original Workshops site before the workshops expanded. The plaque reads "Near this site on 25th February 1864 Lady Bowen, wife of the Governor of Queensland turned the sod to mark the beginning of the first railway line constructed in Queensland from Ipswich to Bigge’s Camp (Grandchester) 21.5 miles". The added plaque reads "Unveiled by the President D K Wood Esq. 15 November 1969". The monument was erected by the Ipswich Historical Society.
