The corner store represents a significant part of the history of Ipswich, Queensland. From essential grocery suppliers to local meeting places, these buildings have held a number of roles within the community. Many of these structures are now shadows in the streetscape of what they once were. Many sit empty. They have been lost due to the growth of better travel means such as cars and public transport, as well as the introduction of large supermarkets that operated in competition with these corner stores. Previous research on the subject of corner stores have focused largely on the architecture, geography and other tangible aspects. Very few studies, address the intangible values, such as social significance, of corner stores. Understanding the social significance of corner stores is crucial for their preservation and management.
