Corner Stores
Corner stores were at the heart of a local community. Not only did they sell essential groceries, in a time before suburban supermarkets and two-car households, they were also meeting places for neighbours.
For children, the highlight of any visit to the corner store was the lolly counter and the promise of a small paper bag filled with lollies if they behaved.
Today there are still some corner stores still open, for people to pick up a loaf of bread or bottle of milk on the way home. However, many have been replaced by grocery stores, home deliveries, and petrol stations. A few remaining corner store buildings are getting a new lease on life, transformed into speciality shops and cafes -- continuing their role as an important neighbourhood meeting place.
