Description
DescriptionNearly 300 Ipswich Grammar School Old Boys volunteered to serve in the First World War. Of these, 45 made the ultimate sacrifice, while others came home wounded and decorated with military honours.
In 2018 Ipswich Grammar School history teacher Kate Pitty was awarded Ipswich City Council's Viva Cribb Bursary, to complete a project which started with her grade 9 history students.
The boys were given the name of an old boy who served, and were then tasked with honouring 'their Old Boy's' time at school, at war, and after the conflict ended.
From this starting point, Pitty has compiled an invaluable resource that includes bibliographical details of each boy as they transitioned to manhood on the battlefields of the Middle East and the Western Front.
The completed work also features many never before published images and letters, including those written back home to the school's then Headmaster, Mr Richard Kerr.
