DescriptionDr Thornton was born in Cornwall in 1846. He came to Ipswich General Hospital in 1887 as Resident Surgeon. He then became Medical Superintendent in 1887 and held this position until 1915 when he resigned for health reasons. He then returned as Assistant Superindent in 1916, in charge of the epidemic hospital that was attached to the General. He held this position until his death, at his residence on Warwick Road, Ipswich, on 23 June 1920. (Information from Brisbane Courier, 24 June 1920) He was also involved in the establishment of the Ipswich Technical College in the 1890s.
