Description50 miners at the Caledonian Mine started a 'staydown' on 14 February when the mining company decided to dismiss 23 men after the Railway Department cut 100 tons of coal a week from their order. With the support of the miners’ Queensland executive and other unions the miners would stay down the mine 200 yards from the surface, for a week. As a result, the miners won an agreement for only 50 tons of coal to be cut from the order. 12 of the 23 men were re-employed and the other 11 men were placed at Blackheath, at a mine owned by the same company. During the strike the wives of the miners supplied food and meals. 'From this, it was recognised that establishment of a form of continuing organisation of women could help to develop this positive activity even further.' An Auxiliary would be set up that would speak about the problems and concerns of coalfields families.
