J. F. Gilmore

John Francis Gilmore formed a commercial partnership with Thomas Boyle around August 1880. They were to move into the former premises of A. McDonald in Brisbane Street and work together as tailor (Boyle) and draper (Gilmore). This partnership was very short-lived. After 10 months, each man went their own way. It was decided that Gilmore would remain in the same location and continue his drapery and clothing business, whilst Boyle would move two doors away to establish his own tailoring enterprise. 

After ten years trading as J. F. Gilmore, in January 1891 the drapery, millinery and clothing business was offered for sale. Gilmore intended to retire from commerce. The business did not sell and after a couple of months, following the last day of trade, remaining stock was slated for tender or auction. 

A few years later in March 1898, it is believed that Gilmore resumed the drapery and clothing trade as part or principal of, Gilmore & Company. Gilmore & Co. purchased the plant and goodwill of Pigott & Company who were closing their Ipswich branch. They were located in McGrath's Building in Brisbane Street. 

This venture was short-lived as less than two years later Gilmore & Company, Cash Drapers sought disposal of the business. In March 1900, J. H. Harris purchased Gilmore's stock and moved into the site between the North Star Hotel and Hunter's or Given's corner. 

John and Alice Gilmore lived at Knockmoyra, 20 Darling Street, Woodend for several years.
