History

Picture Ipswich holds a vast array of resources that can be used in the study of local history throughout every level of schooling. To see more detailed explanations of how it can be used in primary school classrooms see the Humanities and Social Sciences Hub.

The Defining Tulmur project provides a good starting point for finding images, written sources and information on Ipswich's history based on time period. There are some sections of the project that are still under construction, but each already provides links to resources that could be useful for use as primary sources.

• If teaching a well-resourced period in class, the students can use the hubs as a starting point for their own research journey.

Ipswich in the 20th Century is a useful resource for the local history throughout the 1900s. It goes into detail on many topics that were significant to the community.

The People and Families Hub provides a collection of significant people and families in Ipswich's history.

• This provides a range of options for students and teachers who are looking to find a significant figure from local history to focus on.

The Histories Hub provides local histories provided by local people and organisations.

• These provide further resources for the targeted investigation of people, organisations or events in local history.

The History Assignments Hub provides a range of school and university assignments that have been provided by other history students in Ipswich and allows current students an outlet to publish their own works to help develop Ipswich's history further.

• The assignments on here may be used as inspiration on developing new assignments for use in the classroom, or examples of similar work that can be provided to students to assist their understanding of expectations.
• The hub also provides an opportunity for students who are proud of their work or believe that it could positively impact on the greater study of history, to put their work into the public realm.
  • This could be utilised by teachers who believe particular examples as well, with consent of the students and their families; providing a real-world application to the classwork.

The Schools Hub provides historic information on schools throughout Ipswich.

• The information here could be used in the classroom to engage students in change throughout time using places that they are familiar with
• Images could be used to discuss the growth of the school and perhaps spark discussion on why this change may have occurred.
• School photographs can be used to demonstrate the change in fashion and social expectations over the years.

The Maps Hub provides maps from throughout Ipswich's history, including some of the first maps ever made of the area.

• These maps demonstrate change in Ipswich's landscape. This can lead to:
  • Conversations about how the landscape has changed
  • Conversations about the impact of specific events or population trends on the distribution of urban and suburban neighbourhoods.
  • Future changes that may occur in Ipswich based on specific events or population trends in Ipswich today.
  • What the city valued at different times, and how this is represented in the city
