A. E. Hastings, Watchmaker & Jeweller

A. E. (Arthur Edward) Hastings made a bold move in October 1918 and opened his own jewellery store in Colthup Chambers, 181 Brisbane Street, directly opposite The Queensland Times building. He wanted to be known as "The Big Value Jeweller." Hastings was a watchmaker, engraver and jeweller who also undertook repairs, and specialised in engagement rings. His stock was generally Australian made but included Swiss watches and British Xylonite ware. In addition, he sold sleeve links, brooches, necklets, wedding rings, kewpie rings, clocks, silver brush sets, crystal, trinket boxes, dressing cases, manicure sets, serviette rings, and cigarette cases. 

Years passed and the business thrived, surviving several shop burglaries including those in:  1925, 1931 and 1944. Despite these events and the Great Depression being in full swing, A. E. Hastings chose to perform an extensive and expensive renovation to his store in 1934. This involved both interior and exterior alterations. The front door was set approximately 5.5 metres back from the street with glass display cases forming a corridor to lead customers into the store. Silky oak framing was used to advantage. Work was completed by well known Ipswich tradesmen Arthur Foote Joinery. In addition to these upgrades, there was a special room dedicated to wedding and engagement rings, plus a new basement floor to house crockery, brassware and glassware. The result of these renovations is that the area of the shop increased four-fold.

Two significant events occurred in 1946: firstly, in the middle of that year the business began to be known as A. E. Hastings & Son. Arthur's son George (Arthur George Hastings) had joined the firm and sat for his gemmological exams in November. Secondly, his father, A. E. Hastings was elected President of the Retail Jewellers' Association which was an uncommon honour for members living outside the Brisbane area. 

The business remained at 181 Brisbane Street for at least 43 years.

From 1973-1979, George Hastings was Mayor of Ipswich.
