The City Pharmacy

T. F. Hall (Thomas Frederick Hall) commenced business on his own account about September 1911. Named The City Pharmacy, his shop was in new premises located next to Australian Bank of Commerce which was on the corner of Bell and Brisbane Streets. (Cribb & Foote were on the opposite corner.) Hall had been manager of Ipswich & West Moreton Dispensary (Friendly Societies Pharmacy) at 146 Brisbane Street for about five years, and prior to that  had pharmaceutical experience on the Darling Downs and in Brisbane. He had become a pharmacist studying via correspondence which was highly unusual at that time.  

In 1912, The City Pharmacy sold drugs, medicines, perfumes, soap, tooth pastes and powders, Mosquito Drops (personal insect repellent), "water wings" for bathers, talcum powder, nursery supplies, and sick room requirements. That year C. W. Parslow, the London Tailor moved his business into the premises above Hall's pharmacy. 

When Australia committed to World War I, Thomas Hall was early to enlist and sail for Europe. He was 40 years old in 1914 becoming Quartermaster in charge of medical stores and serving with the 3rd Field Ambulance. His listed occupation in the A.I.F. was pharmaceutical chemist and it would be about 5 years before he returned home. In his absence, The City Pharmacy soldiered on. B. Barnard was appointed manager in 1915 and A. B. Menzies appointed in 1917.  Then the business was sold in late 1917 to Frederick Charles Allen & James Charles Minnis. The latter to be on-site chemist and manager.
