Gay Styles

Gay Styles frock salon opened above Modern Meat Mart in O'Sullivan's building at 100 Brisbane Street in the Ipswich CBD in late 1952. It was touted as "the upstairs salon with down to earth prices." The business claimed individually hand-finish garments that were not massed produced.  This claim seems at odds with their assertion that their stock issued "direct from our own factory." 

Gay Styles boasted that they catered for teens to Size XOS with garments in linen, mock linen, embossed & polished cotton, flannel, crepe, silks, sheer seersuckers and even wool cardigans with pearl buttons, depending on the season and fashion.

In Ipswich at this time, Gay Styles would have been competing with larger retailers like Cribb & Foote, and Rockmans. The business moved into 96 Brisbane Street, next door to Modern Meat Mart in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Certainly in 1961, both Gay Styles and Frank V. Kunze, Family Chemist claimed to be trading from this same address. It is not known how long they continued to do so.
