C. W. L. Heiner & Hooper, Solicitors

The Heiner name was associated with legal services in Ipswich for about three quarters of a century. Three generations of the Heiner family were associated with the firm of C. W. L. Heiner & Hooper, Solicitors. 

Charles William Louis Heiner was admitted to the bar in Queensland in December 1891. Immediately, Charles teamed up with partner Morris to form Morris & Heiner, Solicitors with an office in Greenham's building in Nicholas Street, and another in Chancery Chambers in George Street, Brisbane. Towards the end of the next year the firm sought to rent an office in the front portion of the Ipswich School of Arts in Brisbane Street. Their offer of one pound per week rent was accepted by the School of Arts Committee and the business became a long term tenant in this location until 1945. 

By January 1897, Heiner appeared to be in business by himself. From 1900 to 1906 he performed the role of Ipswich City Council alderman, and Mayor in 1902. His legal firm became known as C. W. L.  Heiner, Solicitor. 

Charles William Louis Heiner died in May 1919 at 51 years of age. When this occurred, his brother-in- law Charles Walter Hooper (previously articled to P. L. Cardew of Ipswich) took over his legal business which then became known as C. W. L. Heiner & Hooper.  For the Hoopers and the Heiners it was a family affair. C. W. L. Heiner had married Adeline Hooper of Mona Lodge, 88 Nicholas Street, Ipswich. Another Hooper sibling was married to D'Arcy Muller, a very long term employee of C. W. L. Heiner & Hooper. The Hoopers of Ipswich were a very prominent family in business, leadership and town governance. Charles Walter Hooper, son of Harry Hooper of Ipswich, had his own thriving law practice in Laidley and seems to have kept the Ipswich business ticking along until C. W. L. Heiner's son, Harry Hooper Heiner was admitted to the bar in 1921, and was able to practice law and eventually become principal of the firm. Originally articled to his father in Ipswich, Harry H. Heiner finished his articles with his uncle in Laidley to complete his legal qualifications.

For many years, the firm of C. W. L. Heiner & Hooper also operated in Roadvale, Boonah, Kalbar & Marburg faithfully visiting each location once or twice per month to deliver legal services. 

Harry Hooper Heiner was head of the firm in late 1945 when Ipswich City Council re-claimed their rented office in the front area of the Town Hall in order to expand the Health Department, thus terminating the firm's 53 year tenancy in that place. C. W. L. Heiner & Hooper then moved to Bostock's Building at 19 Ellenborough Street where E. Bostock & Sons Auctioneers had formerly been located. They remained at this address until at least the mid 1960s. 

The sole proprietor of C. W. L. Heiner & Hooper, Harry Hooper Heiner died in September 1948.  At the time, the firm was one of the oldest established law firms in town.  At the time of his passing, his son Harry Graham Heiner was articled to the firm. Harry Graham Heiner then completed his training in Brisbane and was admitted to the bar as a solicitor in December 1951. He then returned to Ipswich to join the family firm and became the third generation of the Heiner family to work for the old firm. 

The Heiners lived at 18 Clay Street, West Ipswich.
