Interim Children's Library, South Street (2020-2021)
The Interim Children's Library was a temporary library open for a period of 7 months during the final stages of construction of Ipswich Children's Library during 2020-2021. It opened on November 23rd, 2020 and closed on 13th June 2021.
Following the closure of Ipswich Central Library's South Street location on 9th November 2020, adult and teen collections were removed from the space to the new Ipswich Central Library located on Nicholas Street. During a 2 week closure, these movements were completed and there was some re-configuring of the South Street location to suit its new purpose.
Located at the site of the previous Ipswich Central Library, on South Street, the Interim Children's Library utilised the ground floor, with upper floors becoming closed to the public.
The temporary library held a children's collection of approximately 20,000 items as well as a STEAM lab and kid's corner. The library was targeted to an audience 12 and under.
The library held programming targeted at children including story time, STEAM and holiday events. Technologies including robotics and Xbox videogames were available for in-library use by the public.
Following the closure of the interim library, the collection was relocated to Ipswich Children's Library on Nicholas Street, which opened 1 June 2021.
