W. B. Darker - Bookseller & Stationer

Before the newsagency belonged to Walter Bruce Darker (W. B. Darker), it was owned by his brother Thomas Alexander Forbes Darker (T. A. F. Darker) who had purchased it in 1897 from W. M. Payne. The shop was located a couple of doors east of the Post Office in Brisbane Street, closer to the intersection of Bell Street. 

It was in February of 1906 that W. B. Darker became a bookseller, newsagent and stationer in his own right. He had been managing the business for his brother but now it was to go forward under his own name.  In those first few years of the 20th century the business sold Christmas cards, postcards, ornaments, photo frames, school supplies, prayer books, Pears Annual, The Illustrated London News and children's literature including: Boy's Own Annual and Girls Own Annual. The shop also sold tickets for concerts and excursions, and Ipswich show catalogues. For some years, W. B. Darker's was a local agent for Paling & Co., supplying musical instruments and the latest music to Ipswich musicians. Walter Darker believed strongly in community service and was heavily involved in the administration and promotion of several local clubs and associations. Meetings were often held in his "rooms" including that of  West Moreton Mine Managers Association, and, the Colliery Proprietors Association. Examinations were also held here.  In 1908, Railway Department exams for apprenticed clerks were held with 15 candidates attending. Sydney University and Queensland University both held exams in Darker's premises.

Around this time, Walter Darker decided to sell flowers and seeds from his premises in addition to reading materials and his usual stock. This joint venture with William Marsh of Ipswich Nursery was named City Florists making fresh flowers, bouquets, sprays and wreaths available to city shoppers. 

W. B. Darker - Bookseller & Stationer endured through the First World War years. In 1919 Walter sold the business and soon after de-registered the firm name and dissolved any remaining partnership with his brother.

Walter Bruce Darker was a well-known Ipswich identity. He had been a director of both Qld Woollen Manufacturing Co., and Ipswich & West Moreton Building Society. He was also Chairman of Ipswich Hospital Board for four years. The Rotary Club of Ipswich erected a plaque in his honour at the rotunda in Queens Park. 

c1926 Walter moved to Brisbane where he established a new business and pursued commercial interests.
