Harlin Road, No 36, Coalfalls

William Edward Lingard purchased Allotment Two of Suburban Section Eighty B for twelve pounds in 1899. The sale was registered in the Surveyor-General’s Office in Brisbane on the 4th of January 1900. He took out a Mortgage of £290 in March 1902 to be repaid within five years, this may have funded the house construction.

William Lingard was the General Manager of the "Queensland Times" for two periods. In between, he was the Managing Director of the "Wide Bay and Burnett News". He was highly regarded by his colleagues, staff and the people of Ipswich, as can be evidenced by the farewells and presentations to him in 1913 and 1928.

The Queensland Times on Saturday 12th November 1904, advertised the sale of Mr. Lingard’s house. There was more than one Mr. Lingard that owned property in Harlin Road, but it is possible that this was the sale of William’s home. 

The property was sold in April 1906 to Eaton and Ada Emily Winks. Eaton Winks trained as a solicitor in Brisbane and he was a dairy farmer. He was the president of the Farmer's Progress Association in 1910. Eaton Winks was the endorsed candidate of the Queensland Farmers' Union for Fassifern in 1915. This was the first time that the Farmers' Union nominated candidates for a district and separate party, the Country Party. Mr. Winks was unsuccessful in this instance.

Old newspapers found under flooring in one of the bedrooms of the house contained the names Cr. Bachmann, Noland and Maloney. William Christop Bachmann, John Noland and M. Maloney were representatives on the Walloon Shire Council which formed in 1908. Cr. Maloney resigned from the Council in October 1909 which dates the newspaper to 1908-1909. This indicates that the newspapers were laid by the second owners of the house, Eaton and Ada Emily Winks, two years after they purchased the property.

Richard Frederick and Emily Alice Stoneham purchased 36 Harlin Road in May 1921. They took out a mortgage for five hundred pounds in May 1921. Richard Stoneman was a fitter at the Ipswich railway workshops. In 1928 he won a Queensland Railway Invention award for an improved design of a cyclinder drain cock.

The next owners were Theron and Julia Toon who purchased the property in February 1922 and they took out a mortgage for £580. In May 1926, Bertha Hannah Toon, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Toon, of "Charnwood," Harlin road, Ipswich, married Francis Jospeh Morrison. In November 1930, May Toon, the eldest daughter, married Walter L. Collingwood. Once again the address of Mr. and Mrs. T. Toon was given as "Charnwood" Harlin road, Ipswich.

The Toon family owned the property until 1946.
