(1978 article) Death of respected author , poetDescriptionHelen Haenke was an artist, playwright, and poet. She wrote plays, poems, short stories, articles, and operas.
Born in New South Wales, Helen married Willis Lynn Haenke and moved to live in his native Ipswich. They lived in the historic Rockton House and had three daughters.
Helen was a member of the Ipswich Forum Club as well as the Ipswich Business and Professional Women's Association.
Helen wrote for magazines before turning her hand to poetry after attending Queensland University for a course. The 1978 news article 'Death of respected author , poet', thought to be from The Queensland Times, quotes Helen as describing her writing as a compulsion.
Her final play, 'The Passage', was staged by The Ipswich Little Theatre in 1978.
An article appeared in The Queensland Times on Wednesday February 1978 written by Beryl Johnston under the 'On Stage' headline describing the efforts of the theatre group 'Ipswich Young Theatricals' in putting on the play 'Double Concerto' by Helen Haenke at the Ipswich Showgrounds.
Helen Haenke died of cancer at St Andrew's Hospital, Ipswich, in 1978.

Angela Burger was a recipient of a Walkley Award, which recognises excellence in journalism.
One of these images was used in an article in December 1978 with an article about Helen Haenke's death.
