Born in Ipswich to parents Edwin Charles Bond (a baker) and Maria Banfielde.
Bond worked for some time in the office of George Brockwell Gill, before opening his own practice in Ipswich in 1897 to 1898.
He joined Queensland Railways in 1898 as a temporary draftsman and was connected with the construction of Ipswich Workshops. He was appointed to a permanent position in 1900, but was retrenched in 1904.
