Fredolin Schmeider

Fredolin (also known as Frederick/Fredoline/Fridoline) Schmeider was born in Evangelisch, Nordweil, Freiburg, Baden-Wuerttemberg in Germany on 3 March 1828. He married Elisabetha Kohlmann who was born on 29 May 1834 in Gollheim, Donnersbergkreis, Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. Elisabetha Kohlmann was the daughter of Petri Ludovici Kohlmann and Christinae nee Winkler.

Fredoline and Elisabetha immigrated to Australia in 1858. There was a small-pox outbreak on the ship they were on, the 'Fanny Kirchner' and it was placed in quarantine at Port Jackson in Sydney. The manifest for the ship was recorded in Germany, however, due to WWII, records in Germany were lost due to bombing. On the ship, their eldest son, Carl Frederick Schmeider was born, his birth would have been registered with the country of departure. The young family moved to the Ipswich area not long after, leasing land and Fredolin worked as a farmer.

The 1870-1875 Queensland Electoral Rolls shows that Fredolin held Freehold land at Warwick Road at Bundanba (now spelt Bundamba). A lease application for Fredolin was signed on 19 November 1868 for Portion 228 in the Parish of Flinders, County of Churchill. The 1884 Parish Map of Flinders at Queensland State Archives is clearly marked with his name. He also owned Lots 11 and 14 in the Parish of Goolman which was directly adjacent to Lot 228. The fence line of the boundary was also the Parish border. The lagoon on their property "Hillside" at Peak Mountain near Ipswich was known as Schmeider's lagoon. Fredolin was also the publican at the Peak Mountain Hotel, although he was named a farmer. Elisabetha was a Midwife.

Elisabetha died on 11 October 1900 and was buried on the 12 October at the Ipswich General Cemetery in Roman Catholic 1A. The name of the cemetery records is Elizabeth Schmeider.
