Ipswich has a proud musical history through its many longstanding organisations and traditions.

Focussing on ten key musicians, this presentation explores 100 years to 1950. Some names including Leonard Francis, Nancy Jones and Lyla McGuire remain familiar today. Several had distinguished European backgrounds, notably Julius Haimberger, Frederick Cramer and Ida Ponti, while many Ipswich-born musicians enjoyed international careers, including Eric Hayne and Josie Bytheway. Others including ECG Weise and Henderson Johnstone published original compositions. This overview draws upon press reports, photographs and memoirs to build a fascinating overview of music in Ipswich through the careers of ten individual musicians.About the PresenterEmeritus Professor Peter Roennfeldt is a well-known performer and music historian. He appears regularly as pianist and harpsichordist in chamber ensembles and orchestras, while his long association with vocal music currently includes direction of Soirées Musicales Quintette. Peter’s choral involvement commenced during his school years in Ipswich, in churches and with the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir. Subsequently, he directed the Brisbane Chorale and Cantilena Singers.

Peter has published six books on aspects of Queensland’s musical history, mostly concerning educational and performance organisations, cultural venues and musician biographies. His more than thirty articles include the Ipswich entry in the Oxford Companion to Australian Music. After early studies with Nancy Jones, Peter graduated from the universities of Queensland and Adelaide and gained a doctorate from the University of Cincinnati USA.
