Ferguson's Aerated Water and Cordial Factory

Established in 1880, Ferguson's Aerated Water and Cordial Factory stood at the corner of Brisbane and Burnett Streets. This property later became the site of the Federal Hotel at 214 Brisbane Street, West Ipswich. Mr W. Ferguson founded Ferguson's Aerated Water and Cordial business and his son John later became the principal.  After about 11 years Mr Ferguson (senior) went on the establish a cordial factory in Lowood. 

In the late 19th century, there were several other cordial and aerated waters manufacturers in Ipswich, including: J. H. Hooper; John Rendle; W. J. Hooper; and Gordon, Lewis & Co. In 1892 these five producers collaborated to raise prices of their beverages. 

By mid 1896, John Ferguson placed his Brisbane Street property for sale. W. G. Livermore then acquired Ferguson's Aerated Water and Cordial business and upgraded some factory machinery and appliances. A one horsepower vertical "Otto" gas engine was installed.

During 1897 W. G. Livermore removed this business from the Brisbane Street premises to East Street, towards the Bremer River, and next to Mr J. J. Johnston’s Brewery. His intention was to continue the manufacture of aerated waters, cordials, vinegar, hop beer and horehound, under the supervision of Mr Ferguson. 

This relationship appears to have lasted only a few years. In 1903 Livermore started a new venture producing aerated waters in the former premises of the West Moreton Brewery in Booval, and distancing himself from the East Street operations. 

In November 1903 Ipswich Aerated Water Co. (proprietors Barnes & Pitman) began aerated water production in Livermore's old East Street factory. Sometime before this,  W. E. Thomas had conducted a soft drink business in this same facility.
