For 36 hours the city lay under water as flood levels maintained a height of 20.2 metres. Two lives were lost, 43 homes were destroyed with some leaving only their stumps behind. A further 1,674 homes had water in their living areas and 15,000 people were evacuated. As MP Llewellyn Edwards told Parliament, Ipswich was a "devastated, destroyed city".About the PresenterAs an historian, Margaret Cook is fascinated by water and its interaction with humans, animals, and the environment over time. She writes about climate-related disasters, with a particular focus on rivers and floods, and is the author of A River with a City Problem: A History of Brisbane Floods.
