Pierre Louis

Pierre Louis worked in the mines in Ipswich in the 1850s. There was a small mine near the home of M. J. Flynn that was run by a man known as "Moodla". A man from Mauritius worked for Moodla and it was thought that this was Pierre Louis.

The Queensland Times in 1911 carried an article on the history of coal mining in Ipswich. It mentioned Pierre Louis:

He was well educated in the French language. He worked first with the late Mr. John Basilie, a blacksmith, and wheelwright of the fifties. “Pierre” was subsequently employed as a wheel wright by the late Mr. Richard Harvey, who carried on a blacksmithing and wheelwright business in Brisbane Street for many years.

No further reference is found for Pierre Louis in the local Ipswich newspapers but from 1860, a man called Pierre Louise is mentioned in newspapers in Maryborough.

He was on the list of people who nominated Gilbert Elliott Esq. to represent Maryborough in the first Legislature in Queensland. In 1864, he was working as a wheelwright in Maryborough. Just four years later, Pierre Louise died while working as a wheelwright for John Brown. Walter Adams said that Pierre was from Mauritius, was single and was forty-eight years of age.
