Description

In Limestone (Ipswich) in the 1820s and into the 1830s, that shared purpose was supplying limestone for Brisbane and running the agricultural farm as part of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement. The life of a convict in what was then a remote area, was a harsh one and was governed by control, regulations and punishment. The convicts may have had different backgrounds, and the lengths of their sentences varied, but they had a common goal which was to attain their tickets of leave and to begin new lives in a new country. Some convicts reoffended, but others settled into domestic, farming and business life, some becoming prominent members of society.
