Life Story
Mary Cole (nee Gorry)
Mary was born in 1837 in Isaacstown, Country Mead in Ireland. She was the daughter of Jane Dearing and John Gorry and the sister of Christopher Gorry who had arrived in Ipswich in 1844 and was one of the first aldermen elected to Ipswich Municipality in 1860. Mary arrived in Ipswich c.1864.
Mary Gorry and Thomas Cole were married in Ipswich on 20 August 1865 and they had six children:
- William John was born on 7 July 1866
- Mary Jane was born on 6 December 1867
- Ellen was born on 3 February 1870
- Elizabeth Ann was born on 9 January 1872
- Margaret was born on 6 September 1873
- Michael was born on 3 September 1875
- Julia was born on 10 July 1878
Mary died on 20 December 1897 at Booval and the funeral was held the following day.
Thomas Cole
Thomas was born in 1831 in Mulleugar, Westmeath in Ireland. Thomas was the son of Thomas Cole and Mary nee Hefferman. Thomas junior lived in Queensland for forty-three years, having arrived in the area c.1862. He worked at Cressbrook and then on the construction of the railway line to Toowoomba.
Thomas and Mary (nee Gorry) lived in Booval from at least 1876 where Thomas worked as a farmer. It has been common family knowledge that Cole Street was named after the Cole family. Cole Street runs through the middle of some of Thomas Cole’s land holdings which included the land where Woolworths petrol station was built. In the early 1930s two spinster daughters built a house in South Station Road opposite Ivory Street, close to the Booval Fair entrance. The house was built by Tom and Bill Madden.
Thomas died on 21 April 1905 in Cole Street, Booval.

Mary Jane was born on 6 December 1867 at Booval. She was the daughter of Thomas Cole and Mary nee Gorry. She was educated at St. Mary’s Convent School.
Mary Jane married John Dwyer on 23 August 1893.The Dwyer family were pioneers of the Silkstone area. Mary and John had four daughters: Mrs. J. H. Hammond, Townsville; Mrs. J. Ryan, Kilkivan Hotel, Kilkivan; Mrs. E. J. Frauenfelder, Townsville’ Miss Nell Dwyer, Federal Hotel, Kilkivan; and one son, Mr. T. J. Dwyer, of the Booval Bakery.

Elizabeth was a member of St. Mary’s Convent School Old Girls’ Association.
Elizabeth Ann Madden died on 10 March 1938 at her home in Arthur Street, Ipswich at the age of sixty-six.
