DescriptionJohn Cleary was a former sportsman and teacher.
John taught in Toowoomba where he played rugby union. When he was transferred to teach at Harrisville, he took up rugby league and played for the Ipswich brothers Leagues Club.
In 1960, John played rugby league for Ipswich, playing against Toowoomba and Brisbane for the Bulimba Cup.
In 1963, John played rugby league for Queensland against New South Wales and New Zealand, during which he had a broken sternum. He was then selected to play for the Kangaroos, the Australian national team. That year, the Kangaroos became the first Australian team to win the rugby league 'Ashes' trophy in Great Britain. Ten previous Kangaroo team tours had been unsuccessful. As of 2002, according to the 'Sport Australia Hall of Fame', no Australian team has lost a series in England since the initial win in 1963.
Players on the Australian rugby league team in 1963 were paid 12 pounds a week while they were on tour. Denis Flannery (1928-2012), a rugby league player in the 1940s and 1950s and proprietor of the Ulster Hotel in Ipswich, held a charity function for John and raised 50 pounds.
John was transferred from Harrisville to Townsville for a new teaching position by the Director General of Education at John's wife's request.
