Richard Edward Lovell

Richard Lovell and James Everett were charged with animal theft (1 live tame rabbit, 2 live tame fowls, 1 cap and 8 eggs) on 5 April 1832.  The items were the property of Thomas Chamberlain. Richard was 16 years old and James was 14. They were both transported for seven years.

His later life in Ipswich shows that Richard made the most of the opportunities his life in Australia presented him.

On 16 December 1848 Richard purchased two blocks of land side by side in Ellenborough Street, Ipswich (the Cuthbert Building).

On 15 April 1851, Richard was granted the publican’s licence for the Prince of Wales Hotel in East Street, Ipswich. Eighteen months later on 11 October 1851 the Prince of Wales was advertised to let. The Moreton Bay Courier ran the following advertisement on Saturday 11 October 1851.

TO LET - THE PRINCE OF WALES HOTEL
Ipswich. It is useless to descant upon the merits of the above well-known Hostelry, it being now thoroughly established as a first-rate Hotel, but in consequence of the present Occupant being about to enter into a new line of business, he will have no objection to Sub-let it for the remaining term of the lease, and dispose of the stock-in-trade (which is of a most superior description, and procured from the best importing Houses in Sydney) as also the furniture which was but lately purchased and is of the best quality. For further particulars apply to the undersigned, on the premises.

A copy of Richard’s Death Certificate shows that he died on 24 February 1859 from “disease of the brain” with the duration of the illness as only 3 days. Dr, Rowlands saw him immediately before his death.

His wife, Hannah died the following year in 1860 from Atrophy, she was 29 years old.
