The Haggarty Group

The Haggarty family have been in business in Ipswich for 74 years.  Four generations of Haggartys have worked for the company. The business has changed a bit and the firm has moved over the years but Haggartys endures in Ipswich.

Jack and Rene Haggarty established the business in 1949 at 19 East Street, Ipswich. They dealt in scrap metal mainly but also horse hair, bottle collection, and second hand furniture. Jack used a horse & buggy in the early days to collect the scrap metal while his wife looked after the business at home. 

In the mid to late 1950s, J. Haggarty & Co. moved to 226 Brisbane Street. In 1966 Jack & Rene's son, John, joined the family enterprise. John and Sandra Haggarty bought the firm in 1983. A few years later their son Scott also joined Haggertys. Scott eventually became general manager and his son Harry with other family members are the 4th generation to work for the company. 

In 1995 Haggertys transferred the business further west on Brisbane Street to 347-349. This facility was specifically designed for them.  By this time the firm is known as The Haggarty Group. A few years later in 2007 The Haggarty Group acquired Aussie Paint Barn, another business located on Brisbane Street at West Ipswich. In addition to paint, today the company sells construction materials including: reinforcing for concrete, fencing, roofing, and cladding. They have also ventured into manufacturing hose and poly pipe.
