Commercial Bank of Australia Ltd.

The Commercial Bank of Australia Ltd. was a retail bank serving Australia and New Zealand from 1866 until1982 when it amalgamated with Bank of NSW and became Westpac. 

The Commercial Bank was already operating in many country towns in south east Queensland before it came to Ipswich  in 1923, making it the seventh bank in Ipswich at that time.

Prior to their tenancy, Pearson Cameron had alterations done to accommodate the bank in the north side of Hughes & Cameron's building in Nicholas Street. It is believed the Commercial Bank then moved in and commenced operations in early 1923. Within a couple of years the bank purchased the building and shortly thereafter extended the bank premises. In 1926, after significant reconstruction and decoration the Commercial Bank Ltd. began trading from its new premises. The bank now had an external brick front with rich brass and  silky oak interior. Customers entered at the north-east angle of the building and did their banking on the ground floor. There were offices upstairs. George Brockwell Gill was  supervising architect. 

The Commercial Bank building and Hughes & Cameron's building no longer exist. Several neighbouring buildings in Nicholas Street were demolished in 1987 as part of the revitalisation of the Ipswich CBD.
