Shamrock Inn

The Shamrock Inn, Brisbane Street, Ipswich already existed in March 1851. Henry Savary was the licensee at this time. Opposite the pub was the court house. 

When Savary died in 1852 the hotel became available for letting. Alexander L. Noble rented part of the pub premises in 1853 for his fancy bread and biscuit baking business. It is unclear how long Noble remained in the space or how his bakery fared. 

In the early hours of 31 January 1885, the Shamrock was destroyed by a fast moving fire. There was no time to save anything from the hotel however the stock was insured for £200 and the premises for £400. This meant that Alexander McLean the owner and publican at the time, was able to re-build.  Fortunately horses in the pub stables were liberated and saved. Other neighbouring businesses were destroyed including Wilkinson's shilling shop to the west, Boyle's bootmakers, and Ryan's fruit shop.

A new brick 2-storey hotel was erected and opened in December 1885. It was named the Royal Hotel. The Royal Hotel later became the Club Hotel. The building still stands at 215 Brisbane Street and functions as cafe and business premises in 2023.
