Royal Hotel

Called the Shamrock Inn,  the first hotel on this site burned to the ground in January 1885. A new hotel named the Royal Hotel was built in its place, opening its doors in December 1885. The new 2-storey brick hotel was designed by F. D. G. Stanley with ornamental iron work by Shillito & Sons. Alexander McLean was the new owner and first publican of the Royal Hotel. The hotel was known as the Royal for only about 5  years.

1890-1891 the Royal Hotel became known as the Club Hotel, changing its name again in the 1990s to Settler's Inn.

In November 1886 Reese's jewellery shop was located opposite the Royal Hotel on Brisbane Street. A couple of months later W. Tatham's new building was erected nearly opposite the pub. Around this time the monthly meetings of the Ipswich Social & Dramatic Society were often held in the hotel.
