John Madden appears in The Book of Trials held at Moreton Bay on 20 September 1838:
Lance Corporal [?] 20th Regt being duly sworn stated as follows - On or about the 28th of last month/August the Prisoner neglected his duty where in charge of a Flock of Sheep at Redbank – I ordered him to turn out the Flock in order that I might count them as usual; he said he would not, and he’d be damned if he would stay any longer on the Station – this is the second time he has been guilty of the same thing.
Sentence 50 lashes.
