TitleAn Ipswich Icon - McMahons Soft Drinks - Chasing Our Past At HomeDate Created20th April 2021Program Chasing Our Past At HomePresenterPeter McMahonHostMelanie RushModeratorDeannah VeithDescriptionGetting your weekly groceries home delivered is nothing new. Before the rise of supermarkets in the mid 20th century, milk, bread, meat, fruit and vegetables and ice for the ice chest were all home delivered. In Ipswich, soft drinks were delivered to your backdoor, straight from the McMahon's Soft Drink Factory.
About Peter McMahon OAM
Following the closure of the McMahon's Soft Drink Factory in the 1990's, Peter converted the old Martin Street site into the McMahon's Swim Factory. For teaching thousands of kids to swim, and his work with Ipswich Hospice Care, the Rotary Club, Ipswich Show Society, TuffKidz triathlon and Swim Australia, Peter was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2015
In 1934, Frank McMahon established his aerated water business in a small, rented factory on the edge of the Ipswich CBD. By 1940, after securing the supply of soft drinks to the Army and U.S. forces based at Amberley, Frank was able to purchase and expand his factory. After the war, McMahon's Soft Drinks continued to grow, as sons Jim and Peter joined the family business. With home deliveries and hotels and stores stocking the soft drink, McMahon's, at one point, had an 80% share of the Ipswich soft drink business.
