TitleIpswich's Industrial Past Through a Museum Showcase - Chasing Our Past At Home
Date Created21st July 2020Program Chasing Our Past At HomePresenterDr Geraldine MateHostMelanie RushModeratorDeannah VeithAcknowledgementDr Geraldine MateQueensland MuseumIpswich LibrariesPicture IpswichDescriptionThe industrial heritage of Ipswich is most visible in heritage buildings such as the former Mines Rescue Station at Booval and of course the heritage-listed North Ipswich Railway Workshops. But the everyday tools and traditions are not so easily seen, unless a museum visit is on the cards. Queensland Museum has been collecting the industrial history of Queensland for well over one hundred years. Whether it is the looms of the Ipswich Woollen Mill or the tools of a painter from the Workshops, the minutiae of our industrial past is preserved, allowing us to remember more about the industries of Ipswich and the people that worked in them. Dr Geraldine Mate will be presenting some of the stories of Ipswich’s industrial past through the artefacts held in Queensland Museum’s collection.
Dr Geraldine Mate is Acting Head – Cultures and Histories program with Queensland Museum (QM). She has been with QM since 2007 and spent some time working at The Workshops Rail Museum. Geraldine and her team care for collections related to industry, science and technology, transport and social history. She has qualifications in engineering and archaeology from The University of Queensland.
