After the Moreton Bay region was opened to free settlement, Ipswich quickly became a busy port on the Bremer River, with its connections to the rich grazing and farming areas of the Darling Downs and further inland. Besides its mining and railway industries, by the end of the nineteenth century Ipswich was the centre of a thriving agricultural and dairying industry, and was Queensland’s second largest city.

This presentation will take you on a quick trip around some of Ipswich’s amazing engineering heritage … and a trawl around the fabulous Picture Ipswich collection. It also introduces you to the new Ipswich Engineering Heritage tour of 27 sites in central and North Ipswich, developed in conjunction with Engineers Australia and its special interest group, Engineering Heritage Queensland.

Judith Nissen is a professional historian with a special interest in engineering heritage. She has researched and written about a range of engineering topics, including roads and bridges, quarries, water infrastructure, railway lines and stations, as well as engineers and their varied projects.

Her work also involves researching the histories of buildings, ranging from modest homes, through to churches and pubs, warehouses, shops and arcades, and even parks, gardens and trees. Ipswich-focused work has included a professional biography of heritage architect Bruce Buchanan, and histories of the Cooneana homestead, the former Challinor Centre complex, and the Ipswich Bowls Club.
