Reid & Greig Cash Grocers
In 1888-1889 H. Reed and F. C. Lee went into business as grocers. When Reed left the business, Lee was joined by James Reid. In 1890 Lee & Reid was created. Lee left to conduct his own business in about 1898. (Naming it Lee & Reed, this firm continued to trade in Ipswich until at least 1916.) Reid then started in the premises where Reid & Greig would trade in Brisbane Street, in partnership with D. Dalton. This incarnation was known as Reid & Dalton.
When Dalton left, J. M. Grieg joined the business thus forming Reid & Greig in about 1907.
Reid & Greig were produce merchants, provision dealers and grocers. Their premises were opposite St Paul's Anglican Church in Brisbane Street. In the early years of the 20th century the grocer's specialty was 'Blue label' teas. In 1919 Reid & Greig had a staff of 12.
Following the death of James Reid, Henry Nicholls and George Senior took over the well-known business in June 1919, changing the name to Nicholls & Senior.
In earlier times (1850s), William Warren, the first postmaster, carried on business in the same approximate location where the Reid & Greig store would later be. Later in the 19th century this was also the site of Gilmore & Co's business premises, between the North Star Hotel and Hunter's or Given's corner.
James Reid lived in Glebe Road, Newtown.
