Haigslea Lawn Cemetery

History

In the 1870s, H. Loose donate a section of land near St Paul's Lutheran Church for use as a burial ground. The earliest recorded burials took place in 1885.

By 1916, the cemetery land was freehold and held by trustees. At a meeting on 20th October 1916, the trustees agreed to change the name from Kirchheim Cemetery to Haigslea Cemetery, to reflect the name change of the district during the First World War.

After years of financial issues, the trustees decided, in the 1950s, that they could no longer continue to operate the cemetery. The Lands Department appointed Moreton Shire as trustee, with the Council taking over the cemetery in August 1959.

The cemetery remained open for burials for several years after Moreton Shire took over, before closing. In 1989, a petition was presented to Council, and a public meeting held to discuss the re-opening of the cemetery. In 1990, the cemetery was re-opened at the Haigslea Lawn Cemetery.

Also known as Walloon Scrub Cemetery, Walloon Lutheran Cemetery, Lutheran Cemetery Kirchheim, Kircheim Cemetery, Kirchheiner Cemetery, and Walloon Cemetery.
