Churchill

The New District Atlas of Queensland published in 1878, shows that the area from Ipswich to Toowoomba was in the County of Churchill. This suburb has taken the name which was given to the whole county in 1845 and was used for the local post office which opened in 1892.

In 1873, the first Ipswich Show was held at the sale-yards of the East and West Moreton Pastoral and Agricultural Society at Churchill.

The Isambert Brothers established a soap and candle-works in 1866, which were owned by William Hancock from 1883 until his death in 1892, and sold to Harry Tivoli Hooper in 1901. 

In 1918 a meeting was held in Martin's Hall at Churchill to consider the proposal to build a public school. A deputation traveled to Brisbane on 14 March 1921 to plead the case for the proposed school stating that 165 children had to travel from Churchill to West Ipswich State School by train in the morning but had to walk home in the afternoons as there were no trains running. The Churchill State School was officially opened on Monday, 29 January 1923 by Mr. Huxham who was the Minister for Education.
