George (Edward George) Lyon (1893-1973)

George (Edward George) Lyon was born on the 24th of December 1893. He was the youngest of twelve children for parents William and Ellen Lyons. The family grew up in Tarampa near Ipswich, where his father William was known for beekeeping.

On the 25th of September 1918 he married local girl Hulda (also known as Hilda) Cornelia Bunning. Hilda’s family were members of the Lutheran Church at Marburg and because the groom’s family only spoke English and the Lutheran minister only spoke German the wedding was performed at the Methodist Parsonage in Ipswich. The bride’s mother made the bouquet from her own garden.

Together, they raised children Norma, Iris, Una, Len and Carol. George worked as a farmer and was a member of the Local Producer’s Association while Hilda stayed home with the children.

When not at work on the farm, George’s passion was for photography, especially capturing the daily lives of family and friends. A keen amateur, he was known to develop his own photographs.

In later years he and wife Hilda lived at Queen Street in Marburg where he would die on the 18th September 1973 and was buried in the Marburg Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. His wife Hilda would live to the grand old age of 102.
