Description
DescriptionThe centre of Ipswich was inundated by flood waters in January 1898. South Street had 3 feet of water, and the muddy water stretched from Roderick Street to the Riverside sawmills at North Ipswich. To the east, the flood reached Mortimer Street. At one point, the gauge at the Bremer Bridge read 55 feet 3 inches. This image appeared in the 29th January 1898 edition of The Queenslander and was attributed to Benjamin Taylor. The photo was taken near the corner of Brisbane and Mortimer Streets. The Ulster Hotel, then under the management of John Normile, is to the right of image. On the left is a sign that possibly reads Solomon Butcher. At the end of the street, the clock tower of the Town Hall is visible.)References (offline)The Telegraph, Friday 14 January 1898, p. 6.References (online)History of Ulster Hotel
