Description

DescriptionAn example of Wimshurst machine, an electrostatic generator used to demonstrate static electricity by its ability to generate an arc between its terminals, producing a direct current when the arc is formed. The arc formed would be one third of the diameter of the rotating disc and would have produced a noise. The machine was first developed by British inventor James Wimshurst between 1880 and 1883. The machines were frequently copied by experimenters.

It is thought that Ipswich architect and designer Will Haenke may have built this Wimshurst machine and that it might have been used at the Technical College (corner of Limestone and Ellenborough Street) when the electrical laboratory opened in the basement of the building in 1907.

This image is part of the Benjamin and Laura Taylor / I.X.L. Studio collection. Based in Ipswich, Benjamin Taylor is known to have traveled extensively throughout Queensland, with his camera.
