Description
DescriptionThe first St Mary's was a simple timber building, replaced in 1858 with a stone church. With a growing congregation, the need for a new church building was identified and Father Andrew Horan built a church hall for temporary worship use whilst the new church was constructed.
The design was based on St Joseph's Cathedral, Rockhampton, by architect F.D.G. Stanley & Son, that had been constructed 1893-1899.
The new church was dedicated on Sunday 30th September 1904 by His Eminence Cardinal Moran, Archbishop of Sydney.
The album presented to Cardinal Moran on the day contained images of the old and new St Mary's, the church grounds, and other Catholic churches and properties around South East Queensland. Images were taken by Benjamin and Laura Taylor, of I..X.L. Studio, Nicholas Street.References (online)'St Mary's New Church', The Queensland Times, 4th October 1904, p. 9Old St. Mary's - A Relic', The Queensland Times, 23 April 1904, p.11'St Mary's New Church', The Queensland Times, 29 September 1904, p. 10.
