Description

DescriptionThe Federation Referendum was held on 2nd September 1899. The Town Hall was used as the polling booth for the electorate of Ipswich with over 1,640 votes cast by the eligible male population (out of a possible 2,353).

As the doors for the Town Hall were closed for votes to be counted, a crowd formed outside the building, awaiting the results. The returning officer announced the results shortly after 5:30pm, greeted by cheers from the crowd.

The crowd, which continued to grow, then moved towards the Queensland Times office to here the results of polling from other parts of the colony.

The anti-federalists were in the majority with the vote going their way nearly two to one. 558 had voted for Federation and 1,096 against.

The anti-federalist sentiments in Ipswich, however, were not enough to defeat the referendum and on the 1st January 1901, Australia became a Commonwealth.
