Ipswich Cash & Carry
Description
Business TypeRetailHistory
Ipswich Cash and Carry were grocers situated 3 doors from the corner of Brisbane and Ellenborough Streets in Colthup Chambers. They remained in this spot from about 1930 to 1975.
The store had a number of owners/proprietors. George and Edna Alder traded under the name of Ipswich Cash & Carry as early as 1941 but sold to Alfred and Catherine Barnes (Barns) in 1955, who had the business until 1975. Their sons, Ian and Noel also worked in the shop. (Prior to that the family had owned the shop on the corner of Burnett and Herbert Streets where they made aerated waters.)
